The transport sector is a significant contributor to the UK’s carbon footprint. In 2020, transport accounted for almost 30% of total carbon dioxide emissions.

Although rail is considered as a lower carbon alternative – passenger trains produce a third of the emissions of the average petrol car – it is not immune from the government’s decarbonisation agenda.
